Maximize Your 10-Hour Layover: A Photographer’s Story

Updated: Aug 1, 2024

Unexpected layovers can be a photographer's dream or a dreaded delay. When I found myself with nearly 12 hours to spare in San Francisco, I knew I had to seize the opportunity. With camera in hand, I embarked on a whirlwind adventure to capture the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and immerse myself in the vibrant city.

From the moment I stepped out of the airport, I was greeted by a refreshing chill that was a stark contrast to the desert heat I'd just left behind. Eager to make the most of my time, I headed straight for Marshals Beach, a hidden gem I'd discovered online. As I hiked along the trail, I stumbled upon a graffiti-covered wonderland, a perfect backdrop for some experimental shots.

I was so glad I brought a jacket with me. I never really considered how different the temperature change would be flying from the literal desert to the the coast of California. I'm used to Milwaukee, Wisconsin winters so comparatively the weather was similar to that of a Wisconsin Fall. I wanted to make sure I got to see the Golden Gate Bridge and at least stop by for some food on the way back to the airport.

Unfortunately, my 85mm lens, while ideal for portraits, proved to be a limiting factor for capturing the grandeur of the Golden Gate Bridge. Yet, I managed to capture some intriguing details and compositions. The bridge itself was even more impressive than I'd imagined, dwarfing everything in its path. I quickly realized that San Francisco was a city that demanded multiple visits to truly explore its vastness.

The downtown area of San Francisco itself is massive. Honestly probably one of the largest cities I've been to aside from Chicago, IL. Once I saw that I decided to take my losses and plan to explore downtown San Francisco itself in another trip.

On the way back to the airport I did manage to snag a reservation at Colibri Mexican Bistro, which was absolutely amazing. I ordered the Birria Tacos and was definitely recommend stopping through there on your way to or from the Golden Gate Bridge.

Moral of the story, maximize your layover, do your research of the city scape, and explore!

Key Takeaways :

  • Embrace the Unexpected: Layovers can be a photographer's secret weapon. With a little planning and flexibility, you can capture incredible images in a short amount of time.

While I only scratched the surface of San Francisco, this layover ignited my passion for exploring new cities through the lens of my camera. Stay tuned for more adventures as I continue to maximize my travel time and capture the world's beauty one layover at a time.
