Scaling Black Rock: My Wild Birthday Backpacking Adventure

Lately, something has shifted in my creative focus. While I'll always cherish the connection of portraiture, my heart has been pulled towards the intricate details whispered by nature and the strong lines of architecture. It feels like reconnecting with my roots. My childhood was steeped in the outdoors – from peaceful lakeside strolls with my mom along Lake Michigan to exciting fishing trips with my dad at the local beaver dam.

That early love for the tranquility of nature only blossomed when I moved from Wisconsin to the vastly different landscape of South Carolina. Suddenly, the Appalachian Trail beckoned, and my high school years became an adventure of conquering its upstate sections with my friends.

But the call of the wild has evolved beyond familiar day hikes. I've eagerly embraced the thrill of bass fishing, the self-sufficiency of backpacking, and the simple joy of a mindful daily walk – truly appreciating the small wonders that make each day unique. And it's backpacking that has truly captured my imagination. Sure, you can find a textbook definition stating Websters Dictionary defines it as to carry (food or equipment) on the back especially in hiking. But for me, it's pure magic: the act of carrying your world on your back – everything needed for comfort, safety, and good food – and venturing deep into the embrace of nature for a few unforgettable days and nights. Where has this been all my life?!

My first backpacking trip with friends was an absolute revelation. It wasn't an epic trek, but it offered a delightful challenge with some surprisingly steep climbs and descents. Black Rock Mountain became our destination.

After securing our backcountry campsite, the exciting logistics of the "how to get there" began. The Edmonds Trail presented two options: a demanding 4-mile uphill battle – a daunting thought with a 40-pound pack digging into my shoulders (rookie mistake!).

The other? A tempting half-mile stroll with gentle elevation shifts. The choice was a no-brainer. Even that shorter path gifted us a moment of pure bliss: discovering a pristine creek where I could filter ice-cold water – a much-needed boost just before reaching our haven.

Backcountry Campsite #4 was perfect (seriously, the rangers at the visitor center were rockstars!). We created our little oasis with a tent and a trio of hammocks, the ideal setup for a spring evening immersed in the sounds of the forest.

My dinner fantasy of a freshly caught fish didn't pan out, but thankfully, my "Plan B" cooler was packed with campfire-friendly feasts. We devoured savory skewers grilled over the crackling fire, followed by incredible walking tacos cooked in the glowing embers, and ended the night with a nostalgic treat: my family's secret recipe for Reese's S'mores. Every bite was a celebration of the day's adventure.

On our way out, the rangers suggested exploring the local town for food and gear, leading us to a charming Southern restaurant and their unforgettable corn crab chowder.

This trip was an absolute game-changer, and mark my words, backpacking is now a monthly adventure on my calendar!
